For Couples
When it comes to getting your own award-worthy getting-ready photos, your choice of photographer will be your biggest decision. Once that is made there are five things you can do to help make them get extraordinary shots.
1. Communicate your preferences and expectations with your photographer in advance, especially if you tend to be more modest in these types of situations. If you would rather not have your photographer in the room while you are changing, be sure you wait to zip up your dress or put on your tie and cufflinks so they can catch the final moments of your transformation. Don’t forget to notify your parents or bridal party members when you want them to get in the picture.
2. Plan sufficient time so that neither you nor the photographer gets overly stressed. Give your photographer at least 20 minutes to take these special shots.
3. Keep the area tidy and make sure to declutter the space you are getting ready in to help minimize distractions. Remove plastic water bottles and clothing boxes and be sure the bed is made if you are getting ready in a bedroom
4. Incorporate meaningful details into your getting ready routine, such as exchanging gifts, reading letters or sharing a moment with close family and friends.
5. Try to stay open to more candid shots and unplanned moments because these are the getting ready shots that shine.
Remember, the key is to create a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone involved. Trust your photographer’s expertise and you’ll end up with a beautiful collection of photos that tell the compelling story of the moments leading up to your wedding ceremony.
For Photographers
1. Determine where the natural light is best, and be prepared to use flash if there isn’t enough light to get the results you are looking for. If you are lucky, the room will have large windows that provide soft, flattering light for portraits. If the room is less than desirable, make your photos dramatic by using shafts of light from an open curtain to focus only on the subjects that are most important.
2. Capture the bride getting her hair and makeup done, putting on the dress, and any other preparation moments. For the groom, he can be photographed putting on his tie, cufflinks or any other special accessories.
3. Don’t forget the detail shots, including closeups of accessories (wedding dress, shoes and jewelry) to any special preparation shots. Details are the photos that complete your collection for editor’s looking to publish your work
4. Incorporate family and friends in the getting ready images. This could include parents helping with final touches or friends sharing lighthearted moments. Their reactions can make your work priceless.
5. Mix up your shots with a variety of angles and compositions. Closeups, wide shots and candids can all help contribute to a well-rounded collection.
