Soft Focus in Wedding Photography
Photography trends come and go, and many don’t stand the test of time. Remember selective coloring, people jumping off walls, and guys posed like they’re in a scene from Reservoir Dogs? Well, the latter is still with us and the first two are long gone. This year, one of the biggest trends is soft focus in wedding photography and it may be a wonderful addition to your wedding photo collection.
Soft focus is used by photographers to diminish sharp details and create a dreamy mood. For decades photographers have used slow shutter speeds, wide apertures and special lenses to create soft focus photos that look romantic, or to play up the movement in a scene. This effect can also be achieved with special filters, processing techniques, and even vaseline layered over a camera lens. Recently this trend has blown up and we are seeing soft focus in wedding photography being used to make subjects look ethereal and fleeting. We love the look of this trend when it’s done with skill and artistry. While you wouldn’t want all of your photos to be soft focus, you may want a few photos like the ones below to be added to your wedding photo collection. Here are just a few of the photographs that have made us fans.
You may be used to wedding photography that is light, airy, and focused on pretty things, or documentary photography that is all about the moments. There are dozens of photography styles that may appeal to you. That’s why we celebrate every style of photography as long as it is extraordinary.
