Artist Interview with Edwin Tan
Hello Edwin, It is such a pleasure to promote your wedding photography. Can you tell us how you got started?
I decided to begin my wedding photography career in 2007 after I’d attended a wedding photography workshop. It was inspiring to me, how the master photographer captured all the important moments with such finesse.
When did you first realize you had fallen in love with the art form?
Watching the final slideshow that was created by the master photographer at the workshop. That was when I knew this would be my calling, the feeling of capturing the important moments that would last a lifetime for our couples. That alone was enough.
What are your favorite parts of the wedding day?
To experience the happiness, the heartfelt moments, not only from the couple but also from their parents, relatives, and friends who are there to witness a new chapter of their lives.
What should brides and grooms look for when shopping for a wedding photographer?
The connection /chemistry between them and the photographer. The photographer will be the "eyes" that watch over their important day, making it critical that the photographer understands the couple and captures what the couple wants them to see.
What can couples do to prepare for an engagement or portrait session with you?
Discussion and preparation before the shoot is important to ensure all locations are permitted and that our schedule is smooth. Scouting for backdrops and lighting is also important to me if I have not photographed the location before.
What do you think is your wedding photography "super power"?
My speed, I guess! Once I start, I tend to move fast to ensure I get all the compelling pieces of the wedding.
What’s your advice to new wedding photographers?
A wedding photographer is not just a photographer. We have to be good at business, marketing, and be good service providers - before, during and after. I’d advise against becoming too much of a gear head. Instead, invest time to improve your skills.
